Antioxidants are the key to slowing the natural aging process and preventing the onset of cardiovascular disease. The tannins present in wine (especially red wine) are natural antioxidants.
Moderate intake of wine not only helps to prevent cardiac problems but also to reduce the risk of further heart attacks among people who have already suffered infarction. According to a recent study by the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston, moderate drinkers (10 glasses of wine per week) have 32% less risk of dying from a heart attack than non-drinkers. The American Heart Association (AHA) reports that drinking wine in moderation can reduce the risk of suffering ischemic cardiopathy by between 40 and 50%.
In addition to tannins, Reveratrol, another substance present in grapes, is being studied due to its anti-carcinogenic properties and antiviral effect. This suggests that moderate intake of wine has beneficial consequences beyond cardiovascular health. Other recent studies point to the positive effect of moderate wine consumption on the central nervous system with regard to degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease.
According to a study of 25,000 people carried out by Dr. Gronbaek and his colleagues at the Universidad the Copenhagen and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, it is concluded that wine is the healthiest of all alcoholic drinks.
